You know I was just thinking about something along these lines the other night. We were watching Saving Private Ryan, and there was a “making of” sort of featurette, wherein Spielberg was talking about the importance of keeping the Holocaust on the forefront of people’s minds.
Now, I have no problem with someone wallowing in the past, if that’s your bag. But the mythic status this era has taken in the West is just astonishing, in light of Stalin’s tens of millions of Jews, Slavs, Gypsies, and Christians of various stripes, Mao’s “Great Leap Forward” which claimed the lives of scores of millions of ethnic Chinese (among others), Pol Pot’s purge of Cambodia, and Turkey’s Armenian genocide.
Granted, not all of these tragedies outpaced the Nazi’s Jewish Holocaust (though for most of the ones I listed, the numbers killed far outnumber the breathtaking 6M Jews killed in WWII). But the very word “holocaust” is only allowed one meaning–and any use thereof to describe any other event is automatically understood to refer back to Nazi Germany.
Anyway, even given that Jews are the single most important people on earth, and that their deaths are more damaging to the fabric of space-time than any others…
The Jews in Stalin’s pogroms were Jewish, too, weren’t they? So how come Hitler is the worst evil imaginable?
