What a Tangled Web We Weave: On Innumeracy and Incoherence

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Rick Warren, 12/18/2008:

RICK WARREN: But the issue to me is, I’m not opposed to that as much as I’m opposed to the redefinition of a 5,000-year definition of marriage. I’m opposed to having a brother and sister be together and call that marriage. I’m opposed to an older guy marrying a child and calling that a marriage. I’m opposed to one guy having multiple wives and calling that marriage.

STEVEN WALDMAN: Do you think, though, that they are equivalent to having gays getting married?

RICK WARREN: Oh I do. …

Rick Warren, 12/22/2008:

“I have in no way ever taught that homosexuality is the same thing as a forced relationship between an adult and a child, or between siblings,” Warren said. “I was trying to point out I’m not opposed to gays having their partnership. I’m opposed to gays using the term marriage for their relationship.”

I have to admit I’m starting to feel sorry for the guy; I generally have a policy of not criticizing people from the right when they’re being attacked from the Left, and I have sympathy for the media feeding frenzy around him right now.  It seems he genuinely has the Biblical position on this issue, kinda sorta, though he does seem to support “partnerships”, which would give gays marriage in everything but name.

A big concept for me this year is something I call innumeracy and more generally incoherence.  Innumeracy, or as a group the innumerate, are people who seem reasonably intelligent verbally but lack mathematical or logical thinking skills.  It is the mathematical equivalent of illiteracy, and much more common.

Consider the following math word problem from Charles Murray’s recent book Real Education:

There were 90 employees in a company last year.  This year the number of employees increased by 10%.  How many employees are in the company this year?

(A) 9 (B) 81 (C) 91 (D) 99 (E) 100

Murray points out that 62% of 8th graders get that wrong.  When you consider that about 20% of them would get it right by guessing, this means that 77.5% of 8th graders cannot solve the problem.  This probably means about half of grown adults are mathematically illiterate, and only a very few are truly capable of analytical thinking.

As an engineer, this is hard for me to comprehend, thanks to my own internal intuitive comfort in the world of numbers.  When I see a well-expressed person like Rick Warren, I assume that the displayed verbal ability (much greater in realtime than my own) must have an analogous analytical ability.  In my world, if A=B and B=C, then automatically A=C as well.  When someone else denies A=C, I tend to assume they are being dishonest or have bad motives.

This is usually not the case; most people mean well, including Rick Warren.  The problem is an incoherent, illogical belief system that maps poorly onto reality in a universe designed by a coherent, logical God.  His belief system is: Christians and non-Christians, including gays, can get along if we’re nice and civil to each other.  He does not understand, or will not apply logically, the Scriptural truth that the unconverted world will always hate Christianity, no matter what.  He’s a genuinely nice person willing to be flexible, and thinks everyone else is too; he’s subject to his own bias, just like I am in often misinterpreting motives.  He’s a believer, no doubt, which is why he makes contradicting statements from time to time: one reflects his true belief system (I hope) at his best moments, the other his desire to be nice and flexible, hence the valid comparison of gays to incest (both capital crimes in the Old Testament), and then the backpedaling from that statement.

Postmodernism has been a boon for people like Warren, as the relativism has provided an “in” for his brand of Christianity based on felt needs and subjective experience.  What he didn’t count on is that postmodernism is itself inconsistent, as its tolerance does not include real Christianity.  And when the ultimate postmodern candidate, Barack Hussein Obama, chose Warren to lead his invocation, the pitchforks came out and all of Warren’s previous accommodations and compromises counted for nothing.

This also has explanatory value for Warren’s positions on world poverty, etc.  A person with little mathematical or economic literacy might actually believe in Bono’s scheme (again, an innumerate entertainer) that poverty can be eliminated with more foreign aid.  He really believes ridiculous statements like $20 billion could eliminate global poverty.

The most disturbing thing is that some wear their innumeracy as a badge of courage, of evidence of greater faith.  Did not Jesus feed the 5,000?  Why shouldn’t we step out on faith and go into massive debt* to fund a new building?  The fact that God Himself can perform miracles doesn’t mean we should deliberately put ourselves in a fool position to require one to save our bacon.

So what’s the solution to the problem of innumeracy and incoherence?  Responsible Christians should not place innumerate, incoherent people in positions of great authority or responsibility, regardless of their verbal talents.  Numerate people are still subject to fads and self-deception (scientists who believe in man-made global warming, etc), of course, but at least they have the possibility of logical thought.  However, I’m not holding my breath that theological schools will start requiring a minimum SAT math score for admission.

Part of this has to do with the decline of the Church over the past 100 years or so.  It used to be the three most respectable professions were the law, medicine and the clergy.  Medicine has retained its luster, the lawyers have done quite a bit to ruin the respectability but not profitability of their profession, but the ministry has fallen the furthest.  You don’t see the top 10% of undergraduates typically angling to get into divinity school.  This is a shame, as it is more important than either medicine or law.

I don’t mean to pick on pastors, though I suppose illogic is most grating when coming from those who propose to speak for God.  Incoherence also explains a great deal about politics as well.  The “average voter” makes Rick Warren look like Isaac Newton.  Our President, George W. Bush, cites as his greatest achievement the passage of No Child Left Behind, a law that literally dictates that all children must be above average.  Our economy in recent years was based on the innumerate concept that a greater fool would always come along to buy our houses and stocks even as we produced less and less of value in the country.  Innumeracy is another outgrowth of Bubble mentality in need of correction by a long period of recession and rebuilding.

I do have one final pressing question, and I suppose it will have to wait until the inauguration.  Will Rick Warren show up in a Hawaiian shirt?  I mean, if worshiping God doesn’t call for any different dress than what you would wear to the beach, then surely he wouldn’t show greater reverence to a mere man, right?

*I again have to recognize Dave Ramsey for his brave stand on this issue.  His opinion is that if it involves debt for anything other than a primary residence, it can’t be God’s Will, and that includes church facilities.

The Politics of Guilt and Pity

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

A long quote from Rushdoony’s book The Politics of Guilt and Pity I dug up based on a comment made on my previous post.  This was written in the 1970’s; while I don’t agree with everything Rushdoony has written, we have to admit he was a prophet here.  It explains a lot, from the election of Obama to Rick Warren’s teaming up with Bono to spend more of your (debt-financed) tax dollars on foreign aid:

The human race, in apostasy from God, is deeply involved in a rebellious claim to autonomy and in the guilt which follows that claim. As a result of this omnipresent sense of guilt, there is an omnipresent demand for justification. The expression, “He’s trying to justify himself,” points to this demand by man for justification, and insistence on psychic or spiritual wholeness of health. A sense of guilt leaves a man feeling like a leaky, sinking ship: the energies must all be resolved to the repair of that breach. The psychology of the guilty man is this geared to self-defense, to spiritual survival, by means of an overcoming of the breach of guilt. The concern is a demand for salvation: the sinking ego wants to save itself, to find justification by making atonement for its guilt. [...]

A closely related activity is sadism, the transfer of guilt to an innocent party to reduce them to the same level of impotence and guilt. [...]

The reality of man apart from Christ is guilt and masochism. And guilt and masochism involve an unshakable inner slavery which governs the total life of the non-Christian. The politics of the anti-Christian will thus inescapably be the politics of guilt. In the politics of guilt, man is perpetually drained in his social energy and cultural activity by his over-riding sense of guilt and his masochistic activity. He will progressively demand of the state a redemptive role. What he cannot do personally, i.e., to save himself, he demands that the state do for him, so that the state, as man enlarged, becomes the human savior of man. The politics of guilt, therefore, is not directed as the Christian politics of liberty, to the creation of godly justice and order, but to the creation of a redeeming order, a saving state. Guilt must be projected, therefore, on all those who oppose this new order and age. [...]

…the caretaker state masks its tyrannical love under the name of ’social justice.’

The more a civilization advances, the deeper will its sense of sin become, because the increase of prosperity and cultural advantages will only increase the masochistic desire to pay for progress, which the individuals unconsciously believe requires atonement before enjoyment. As a result, the very liberating forces of civilization themselves call into existence the forces of enslavement. [...]

…Communism has used moral nihilism to prepare the way for passive political slavery: guilty men are more docile slaves.

…In the United States, as the nation has departed progressively from God, it has indulged progressively in a debunking of its history, in a general confession of many past faults, some often imagined. The hypocrisy of such confessions is striking: by confessing the sins of past generations, the present scholar or generation thereby implies its own superior virtues and it innocence of those sins. By the fact of such debunking or confession, it confesses also, very modestly, that wisdom is now born to us and is among us, so that confession again becomes a vehicle of pride. [...]

Again, Americans are repeatedly assured that American history is a long account of guilt, towards Indians, Negroes, minority groups, labor, Mexico, and, ultimately, all the world as well for refusing the to enter the League of Nations. This is defective history and perverse politics. Its purpose is the cultivation of guilt in order to produce a submissive populace.

More basically, the subtle indoctrination of humanistic scholarship infers that the Christian, and, in America, the Protestant in particular, is guilty because he is a Christian. The inference is that the Christian has no right to his identity; he must recognize all others and their rights, but he himself has none. The principles of the atheist must govern state and school; the wishes of all others have status before the law, and his have none. [...]

Wherever false responsibility is promoted, and ugly strategy of power is present. This strategy can be briefly summarized. First, make men feel guilty for all things and for everyone. Whatever happens on any continent or country is their responsibility and their burden. All the starving, needy, oppressed, and all the indigents, criminals, and diseased of the world are their burden, and they are guilty of evading their responsibilities if they do nothing about them.

Second, it is obvious that men cannot do much more than care for their own families. Therefore, ask them to exercise this imposed responsibility for the world by delegation, to delegate it to the state and the elite planners.

Third, by being given this world responsibility, the state and its elite planners become gods, governors of all things. They can now begin to remake the world in terms of their superior wisdom. God, after all, hardly had their superior and scientific intelligence.

Fourth, salvation has thus become the work of man. Man remakes man by statist law and action….

The Death of the Middle Class, Part Two

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

A long overdue follow-up to The Death of the Middle Class, Part One.

If present trends continue, what will America look like in the future?  The answer is staring us in the face on our southern border: Anglo-America will become Latin America.  All of the same demographic groups are on the chessboard, and we will likely see similar results.

The Bush family is planning ahead. They have extensive business dealings with and Jeb has actually married into the corrupt white elite of Mexico. For it seems that the Latin American model is inevitable for America. And in that model, who you know and are related to is most important.

Observant students of history will consider Barack Obama not only the first African-American president, but also the first Latin-American president.  His election on meaningless slogans directly taken from Latin American political campaigns (”Yes we can”) is an indicator of the civic health of our Republic.

I recently read an essay by a French intellectual of the “New Right” in Europe. In this essay, he argues that nationalism is ironically, at its core, individualistic. By drawing a “big fence” around a sufficiently large group (”the nation”), loyalties shift from specific people (family, close kin, co-religionists, etc) to the abstraction of the nation. Abstractions are less demanding and messy than people. Give the government 50% of your earnings and let them take care of your parents, educate your children, etc. Socialism, when it has functioned at all, has always been a national sort of socialism. Ironically, the New Right is defending nationalism as a necessary precondition for socialism, a political given in the European system. I thank God my ancestors moved to America!

It seems to be a media fantasy that the new internationalism will lead to a multicultural utopia of atomized individuals with identities as multifaceted as their iPod playlists. This is really just tripe of course, to finish the decapitalization of Western Civilization.

Throughout all of history, proximity of diverse groups of people increases intolerance. This is why silly white liberals from lily-white rural Vermont have such silly socialist ideas about how people ought to get along. When many rural Vermonters don’t even have locks on their doors, they assume that everyone else must be just as honest and well-intended as they are, and any deviation from that system (such as the need for locks and firearms for self-defense) must be pathological.

If a multicultural future is inevitable, we must plan for this reality with facts, not fantasy.

First, the future will likely not have a middle class. Achieving a “comfortable” income level will no longer be formulaic and predictable. Most will be in a sort of tolerable poverty provided by plentiful material goods and cheap, crude mass entertainment (e.g. Wal-Mart and American Idol respectively are precursors to the future). If you wish to be middle class, you had best set your sights on filthy rich. The iron law of wealth distribution is returning, and the top 20% will own 80% of the wealth, likely more. It will be a mad scramble against global competition and regression to the mean (i.e. if you’re above-average at something, odds are your children will be closer to the average) to stay in that 20%.

So the struggle will be one of continuous improvement of one’s progeny. I want my children and grandchildren to be more moral, more intelligent and more beautiful/healthy than myself.

The masses will be degenerate, stupid and fat. Our new elite will be a new caste of the moral, literate and fit, based on the new capital of good genetics, good education and a more rugged morality better able to delay gratification.  Delayed gratification, or low time preference, correlates with intelligence but may actually be the driving factor of many success stories: people who save money instead of spending it do better financially; people who control their eating habits are more attractive and live longer than those who do not.

Acquiring and keeping capital will mean high resistance to marketing messages.  If your kids eat advertised junk food and become obese, they will not be able to attract a high-quality mate, decreasing your family’s genetic capital.  If your little girls become materialist “shop-a-holics”, as explicitly encouraged by advertisements to “splurge” on this or that plastic crap from China, they will drain your family’s monetary capital to nothing within one generation.

A friend of mine has described a microevolutionary trend called “Survival of the Prettiest”.  He said he noticed that pictures of people considered beautiful just 100 years ago look rather plain compared to the beauty we see all of the time now.  If you go into any ultra-high-end suburb (above the striving middle class range of homes), he observed, you will see fit, pretty mothers pushing around strollers; my friend comments that the men are as uniform in their earning power as the women are in their beauty.

While there has always been a correlation between beauty, health and IQ (beauty is basically symmetry of proportions, which indicates good genetics), this is now in overdrive as the cutthroat nature of modern capitalism increasingly gives males with the practical intelligence to earn money all of the cards in picking mates.  Long gone are the days when the pretty cheerleader could marry the cute but average jock and live comfortably ever after as long as her husband joined the union and worked hard for a high-paying manufacturer.  Now most women like that would be foolish not to go to the best college they could get into and pick from a pool of mates more able to provide a middle class standard of living.  Of course, in the second generation, these smart-male, pretty-female pairings tend to produce children who are both smart and pretty, which further enhances the correlation.

But this is not a Catch-22.  If your family is not wealthy, it means you lack monetary capital.  But monetary capital is itself just the end result of moral and genetic capital.  Thanks to the Internet, people merely poor in monetary capital can still build up moral capital.  Your children can receive an education second-to-none, for free.  Or you can waste your time.  Ironically, it is the very cheap abundance of Wal-mart and the Internet that will first increase then permanently decrease class mobility.

At the top will be people with all three forms of capital, some of whom will fritter it away.  At the bottom will be the deliberately ignorant, people who could read, for free, all of the great works of our civilization but choose to spend hours on Youtube.  And occasionally there will be that poor family out there, doing their best to improve themselves with the vast free resources available, akin to the children of the pioneers who became literate by reading their King James Bible by candlelight when the days’ chores were finished.

Second, there are mass opportunities as the capital stock of Western Civilization is redistributed. If we hope to rebuild it one day, we need to recapture as much of it as we can.

Some may have been shocked by my description of the future elite as moral, for our current elite is anything but moral. How will immoral elites be replaced with moral elites (and I would add- possibly a Christian elite)?

The strategy pursued by the current elite is fundamentally suicidal. Believing in nothing, they seek stimulation above all else and ultimately death. This elite is sterile, barely having children. And they will pass away.  Notice how easily non-Western elites who still cling to traditional notions of morality and thrift (e.g. the top 1% of Pakistanis, Indians, etc who move here as highly skilled immigrants) are able to displace our elites in professions such as medicine and academia.  Imagine how much more effectively the vanguard of homeschooled children, detached from the toxic popular culture but, unlike Third World immigrants, still possessing the inner spark of Western Civilization, will take assets and power from the childless, amoral elite that currently runs the country.

I believe that a systemic inculcation of the children of the saving remnant of this nation with Biblical values of thrift, hard work and honesty will result in the inevitable distribution of capital from unworthy hands (our current elite) to our hands. I have experienced this myself. The second-largest asset I own came to me at a bargain price because of someone’s divorce. One person’s inability to delay gratification led to a distribution of capital from his hands to mine.

Look around this society, or take a walk in a mall, and just look at what you see. There are so many people who are fundamentally unemployable in any job that it must become obvious that the moral capital account of our Christian past, on which we’ve been coasting for two to three generations at least, is rapidly being depleted and will soon report “Insufficient Funds.”

As massive amounts of capital are distributed from Baby Boomers to their children, the latter’s inability to delay gratification will result in massive bargain sales of important assets to those with the simple patience to avoid debt, save cash, work hard and stick together. In the long run, Dave Ramsey, in teaching Christians these skills, may have more impact on the future than Billy Graham (I just wish Dave would stop advising people to buy stocks when dividend yields are below historical averages).

If the destruction of our country continues (which really means the dissociation of the nation from its government), we must see ourselves less as generic Americans and more as a self-conscious elite minority in a multicultural society. All over our country, little groups prosper because they have a common faith and stick together. The two wealthiest ethnic groups, according to The Millionaire Next Door, are the Chinese and Russians. Other rich minorities you’ve probably never heard described as such include Armenians, Syrian Jews, Lebanese and Greeks. They succeed through niche businesses, cooperation and explicit preference for doing business with each other.

If the American nation is no longer to be, then we must decide the boundaries of a new group. Homeschooling and/or Christian-schooling Protestant Christians will be their own minority elite in the new polyglot America. And given the high achievements of our ancestors and the high calling of our faith, we should not be content with running convenience stores (the niche of Pakistanis) or hotels (the niche of high-caste Indians). We ultimately must seek to control the means of influence itself: a large capital base at least sufficient to control major media and thus politics. In the moments when I am most postmillenial, I would argue the ideal of the unity of all capital in Christian hands.

Before we can get there, though, many Christians will have to let go of their pietist contempt for wealth and empire-building. Wealth is nothing more than control of God’s Creation, which was declared good by God Himself. Man makes it an idol, but there is nothing fundamentally evil about lumber, land or oil. Someone will own our country after the capital of the current decadent elite is redistributed through the iron laws of economics. If not us, who?

There is a certain sanity in this acknowledgment, of coming to grips with reality. While we must not yet give up on our country, it is nice to know there is still a strategy if our depreciating returns in convincing our fellow Americans to “wake up” are unsuccessful. They may not wake up because they are already dead, anesthetized by Grand Theft Auto and Guitar Hero.

The challenges will be immense, ironically in proportion to success. The lure of frivolity and materialism is very hard to resist, especially if our group can attain control of significant amounts of capital, but the lessons of the past should make us realize that there is nothing inherently in us that makes us worthy of our civilization (as Sam Francis said, European peoples are a necessary but not sufficient ingredient for Western Civilization). The virtues of the past must be diligently rebuilt with each generation, lest the base of the capital be itself eroded. The more material wealth and influence we attain, the harder we must be in teaching the next generation the values that enable the wealth.  In the long-term, if proper Christian doctrine is not instilled in your grandchildren, they may feel guilty about inherited wealth and seeking to please their peers, give much of it away to causes totally at odds with the family interest (I am thinking specifically here of the great man Henry Ford, whose wealth now funds a foundation run by alien Marxists).

I would argue that common religion and values are not enough, that most successful groups contain a commonality of both physical descent and religion. But on a practical level, there is no need to argue about this, for if I am right about this it will be true “on the ground” anyway.

I hope my readers do not find this post too depressing, as it is an acknowledgment that reaping follows sowing. It is the West that voluntarily gave up its faith, surrendered its authority and leadership and is now allowing itself to be invaded and destroyed. Even at this late hour, it is only for lack of will that we are where we are. But as Christians, we ought to realize that it is the inside that counts, and while still strong on the outside, the corpse of the West is in a whitewashed tomb.

Absent a miracle that looks less and less likely, rebuilding our civilization may take as long or longer than the time it took to destroy it. I would date that rot back to the Enlightenment, the anti-Biblical notions of equality and “rights” that lead to the horrors of the French Revolution and later the greatest crimes in the history of humanity under Stalin and Mao. So that’s about 300 years or so by my count*. But it is a good time to be alive, as the opportunities for greatness, for acquiring wealth and doing good may be greater than at any time in history. The essence of life while we are still on this Earth is to struggle for what you love and love the struggle.

*Immigration itself is a highly assymterical act.  When someone immigrates to the US, that is not considered an immoral or aggressive act.  However, to un-immigrate someone, i.e. make them go home or to their parents’ or grandparents’ home, is considered to be a very aggressive act.  The flabby mindset of most Americans would be horrified at such a proposal, but this is exactly what has to happen eventually to claim any part of our nation back for our children**; most nations of Europe have done this with alien groups historically, so it’s not unprecedented.  But it will take a long time for that kind of mental toughness to redevelop.  I would argue that when someone takes an action that requires an aggressive or immoral act to reverse and that act encroaches on the rights of others, then that action is itself aggressive and immoral.

** It is possible we have irreversibly entered an era of multiculturalism, where traditional nation-states are obsolete.  I can accept this, and this highlights the need even more to be a self-conscious minority.  However, I do note a great inconsistency in the application of this principle.  It’s always a country like the USA, or the Netherlands, or Sweden that is “obsolete”.  There’s never any talk that China maybe is obsolete, that Chinese people need to stop being medieval and let all of Africa immigrate into their country.  There’s never any criticism of Saudi Arabia for being explicitly Muslim and Arabic.  It’s always the Christian, European nations that are the target of this, and so I reject this logic until it is at least equally applied to all groups.

Rick Warren and Obama

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

So now everyone’s heard the news that Rick Warren will be doing the invocation at Obama’s inauguration.  I’ve beat this topic to death in this space, so I will not repeat my reasons for disliking Warren’s methods.  Just remember you read it here first.

I can smell a liberal a mile away, instinctively, and I knew early on what this guy was, a people-pleasing jellyfish made popular by his penchant for translating some Christian concepts into horoscopy-so-obvious-it-sounds-profound-when-you-say-it-a-certain-way self-help psychobabble.

So to recap: Obama voted for legislation to allow born-alive infants to be murdered in Illinois, and this “Christian” pastor is going to endorse him by praying at his inauguration.  Sometimes the incoherence of the modern church is too much to take.  Next year the churches will be doing Warren’s next 40-day study.

And Warren also pulled anti-gay language from his website this weekend.  Southern Baptist pastors accomodating queers and palling around with baby-murderers, and only condemning people for being too conservative or judgmental.  How far we have come.  Let us hope churches like Saddleback are temporary insanities of the Bubble mentality now being corrected.  It would make sense that this kind of thinking would come out of southern California, from people who thought houses were ATM’s and are now being taught some very painful lessons in economics.

Those of us in the reality-based communities of this nation can hope that the practices of California churches will be held in equal disrepute as the practices of California real estate markets.

Intelligent Design vs. Evolution: A Conclusion

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

1. Like so many things in our culture, this whole debate can only be truly understood as an outbreak of the Great White Status Game.  This is where urban, liberal white people like to make themselves feel superior to rural, conservative white people.  Since Christian religious belief is associated with the latter, any attack on that is money in the bank for status-seekers.  See Stuff White People Like for an anthropological profile of the typical urban white Obama voter.

2. Having been the butts of this game since at least the 1920’s, Christians have sometimes engaged in reactionary thinking.  Part of this is the complete rejection of evolutionary thinking.  They somehow hope they can corner the liberal white people, who thrive on feelings of moral superiority, with this moral logic: A. Hitler was an atheistic Darwinian, B. Liberal whites really hate Hitler, who killed a few million in preferred liberal victim categories (the tens of millions of Christians killed by anti-Darwinian atheist Stalin probably deserved it anyway and don’t really count), C. Therefore, liberal whites are hypocrites for hating Hitler and loving Darwin.

3. What Christians don’t get is that white liberalism is a false religion.  False religions have hypocrisy at their heart.  In fact, the hypocrisy is what feels so good, as it demonstrates one’s sophistication to hold conflicting, complicated beliefs while feeling superior to the rubes who are bothered with notions of consistency.  Witness Al Gore preaching about global warming while riding on a private jet.  THAT’s why it feels so good to them, to be able to tell other people what THEY should do, the little people out there in Nowheresville, while themselves being elites that can do what they want.  Four legs good, two legs better!  Pointing out hypocrisy in their point of view will get you nowhere.

These are people who believe all sorts of conflicting things, among them Steve Sailer’s statement of the Great Liberal Schizophrenia:

A. IQ is of no importance and all problems that appear to be related to IQ can be solved by hiring lots of white liberals to run Head Start programs and the like.

B. White liberals have higher IQ’s than everyone else.

A false religion’s ability to enforce adherence to its dogmas despite obvious internal contradictions is a testament to its power, not its weakness. In fact, these hypocrisies are useful in that they provide for the social isolation and ostracism of heretics foolish enough to point them out, and opportunities for the faithful to engage in competitive demonstrations of moral and intellectual superiority.  Christians are wasting their time because it is not about logic, it’s not that they have the wrong ideas, it’s about status and an intellectual covering for pursuing personal immorality.

4. Intelligent design has been a useful attack on atheistic, non-scientific macroevolution. Evolution that we can observe, or microevolution if we must use a distinction, is a real thing and a useful framework in much of biology.  Most Christians acknowledge this, but unfortunately the issue has been politicized in Christian circles.  By saying Darwin=Hitler, we have made any practical consideration of evolutionary theory in politics off-limits.  Unfortunately, all political conclusions of evolution are microevolutionary in nature. We cut ourselves off from important truths and that compounds into serious errors.

5. To take an example, it’s quite obvious to me that the difference between a moose and a white-tail deer is not all that different than that between a Great Dane and a chihauhau.  I have two dead animals on the wall at my office (not mine).  One deer was taken locally, near the Texas coast.  The deer is small.  On another wall is a deer taken in north-central Louisiana, quite a bit larger and better-looking in my opinion.  As we go from south to north among deer we see a transition from smaller to larger, from puny white-tails to larger white-tails to mule deer and then elk and finally to the moose and caribou.  It is quite obvious these animals likely had a common ancestor (and if one insists on a literal interpretation of the Flood events in Genesis, this becomes even more important given the limited space on an Ark) and that climate pressures have created the animals we see today.  We don’t see deer turning into cats, but we do see deer turning into smaller or larger deer based on their environment.

6. There is no reason why similar selection pressures could not have occurred in human populations.  In one area with lush vegetation, where bananas and avocados, nature’s perfect foods, grow wild in abundance, selection pressure would favor social aggression over survival skills and problem solving.  In the cold, barren winter steppes of Caucasia quite a different selection pressure: the hard lessons of the ant and the grasshopper, as those who failed to plan failed to live.  Cooperation among neighbors would tend to isolate the socially aggressive while working with tools to hunt large prey would be an important survival skill.  In a place with plentiful food, smooth talkers who could navigate complicated social structures would thrive, whereas the barren winter would reward strong, silent types who get the job done without much talking.  Like deer, all humans have a common ancestor, as confirmed by the Bible, but different types of humans would emerge as they spread out into different environments.

7. The timescale of these events is not a threat to Biblical literacy.  If man can create the chihauhau and the Great Dane from a common wolf ancestor, there is no reason these changes would have to occur over millions of years.  In fact, scientists now tell us that human evolution “exploded” about 10,000 years ago.  That’s within the margin of error for Biblical literalists.

8. The major error of Christians who adopt reactionary anti-evolutionary views is the same major error of liberals everywhere: that humans are interchangeable parts shaped entirely by their immediate (i.e. not historical/genetic) environment with just minor cosmetic differences.  A few examples:

A. Christians are called to stand up for the defenseless and downtrodden.  The Social Gospel points out that certain groups have unequal outcomes in society.  Since all groups are the same (this is the reactionary error) , any differences are due to injustice by the more successful group, not natural outcomes of natural differences between groups.  Result: so-called Christians agitating for Leftist political causes as a “precondition” for spreading the real Gospel.

B. Many churches are at the forefront of advocating mass immigration; even Southern Baptist Richard Land was calling for amnesty two years ago.  Again, if humans are interchangeable parts, then it is truly cruel to deny entry to people “just like us” who live in squalor and just want the chance to come to our country and better themselves.  A border policy is defensible only when we recognize that the situations of most people groups on Earth are pretty much of their own doing and moving them around won’t change anything in the long run, but would make the better countries worse off.

C. Rick Warren is running around trying to get American churches to buy AIDS pills for Africa, diverting resources that could be directly spent on missions.  Again, since we’re all the same, obviously greater AIDS rates in Africa are not the result of Africans’ high time preferences and inability to think beyond the next 15 minutes and keep their pants on or use a condom.  You see, it’s OUR fault because of colonialism that ended over fifty years ago, the same colonialism that gave Africa the only stable government and best public health in its whole sad history.  That’s why we have to spend money on AIDS, cleaning up the mess we made.

9. Finally, we have to lose the media-induced paranoia about acknowledging possible human microevolution.  The Ben Steins of the world think every Christian country is one generation from Auschwitz, which is why they try so hard to push liberal egalitarianism.  And he’s more than happy to use Christian reactions to atheistic evolution to do that.  But if we accept the liberal postulates, we have no consistent ground on which to defend the sanctity of our national borders, culture or civilization.

Let’s think back to the first example of Nazi crimes in Expelled: the euthanasia of 70,000, some mentally ill, in German hospitals.  We can all agree this should never happen again.  However, all that is necessary is to acknowledge the moral evil of it.  We do not have to overreact and pretend that mentally ill people are really the same as sane people.  We do not have to suppress all discussion of mental illnesses out of fear that talking about differences between the sane and mentally ill will cause hatred and murder.

10. All truth is God’s truth and ignoring the political consequences of human biodiversity will eventually destroy the very nation that put both Nazism and Communism in the dustbin of history.  This nation is also the breadbasket of Christianity, and churches who claim to preach the Gospel yet welcome the destruction of this nation through mass immigration are destroying themselves as well. The idea that our civilization can be sustained without a substantial core of the people who created it is like assuming ants can run a beehive.

Human Microevolution in Overdrive & Ben Stein’s Expelled

Porn, fast food, now robots.  I predict selection pressure for “reality preference”, individuals with a strong sense of what’s real and what’s not to avoid falling into false endorphin-producing ruts.  It seems that should correlate with other types of realism, and even conservatism, which is nothing more than an acknowledgment of man’s fallen nature.

Microevolution is real and the Know-Nothingism about evolution as revealed in Ben Stein’s Expelled is not realistic.  Macroevolution is ridiculous and can certainly be questioned, but microevolution accounts for a lot.  A Chihauhau ain’t a Great Dane but both are dogs.  The idea that similar differences among human groups can’t be explained by similar microevolutionary pressures is ridiculous.

Stein smears all Darwinian ideas with the brush of the Nazis (a sure sign of a weak argument, the ultimate ad hominum), when in fact at least ten times more people were murdered by the explicitly anti-Darwinian Soviet Union and Red China.  History shows that it’s a lot more dangerous to insist we’re all the same than to entertain the possibility that we may be fundamentally different.

The Bible, of course, takes the right course.  It acknowledges that human groups are different but insists we are all made in the image of God.  The Nazis were wrong in that they did not recognize this truth.  The Soviets, on the other hand, took the other extreme and pathologized all inequality as injustice; Soviet envy proved to be a much more potent impetus to murder than Nazi contempt.

Christians should be careful about adopting the reactionary Soviet view because certain people like Ben Stein have an agenda to push in highlighting the lesser set of crimes over the greater.  Ben Stein doesn’t want to talk about the murder of 20 million Ukrainian Christians in the name of equality; it would be bad publicity for the Hollywood Left to portray Christians as victims.

Tom’s New Favorite Blog

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

Well, it merits at least a passing interest: The Doctor Housing Bubble blog.

This guy really hits the spiritual core of the rot associated with excess credit and prosperity:

The story of Jdimytai Damour, the Wal-Mart temporary employee who was trampled to death is a sickening verdict on the consumerism disease plaguing this nation.  The worker was trampled to death as rabid shoppers broke down the door at 5:00am in New York.  Other Wal-Mart employees tried to help Mr. Damour but the crowd kept rushing in like salmon swimming upstream to spawn.  Shoppers simply stepped over his body and witnesses even said that some people continued shopping even after the incident was announced!  An innocent man was killed simply because people couldn’t be civil or patient enough to purchase a VCR?

In Desert Hot Springs, two people were killed when they had a shootout in a Toys R Us store:

“(LA Times) Joan Barrick, 40, of Desert Hot Springs said she was buying a Barbie Jeep for her daughter when two women started brawling. As the women swung at each other, the men they were with also started arguing.

The younger of the two lifted up his shirt and flashed his handgun, pulling the grip from his baggy pants pocket. The other man yanked out his own handgun and started chasing him down the aisle and firing, witnesses said.

Barrick hid behind a stack of DVDs and recited the Lord’s Prayer. “If I’m going to die, I need to make peace,” she said. “A lot of people were crying. I was crying. We were all very, very scared.”

What a sad state of affairs.  In early reports, it looks like people somehow defied the laws of financial logic and are spending in droves.  Of course, it is much too early to gather figures but the fact that we are even discussing “brisk and strong” sales is astounding.  People are rushing out to buy Guitar Hero and Grand Theft Auto to indoctrinate a generation in mindless drivel.  Think of Grand Theft Auto.  You play the role of a criminal who car jacks innocent bystanders and shoots police while talking with prostitutes for fun.  Is this what we are spending our money on?  And Guitar Hero gives people the chance to play a fake guitar and pretend to be a rock star.  Just what we need, another generation of self indulgent egomaniacs.

What ever happened to learning to play a real guitar?  We have a large number of our population who are living fake lives.  Just look at what TV shows are popular.  All these reality shows have large audiences because people are so bored with their own lives that they need to watch the drama of others to feel alive.  And the lives of those on reality TV aren’t even real!  How twisted is that?  We can lament about these societal issues but look at this fake economy we have built over the last decade.  A society pretending to be richer than it really is by mortgaging our own future with debt. Then we expect that the next generation who is in a trance in front of Grand Theft Auto is going to be equipped to deal with this epic calamity?  Time for parents and the younger generation to prioritize.  The only thing we have trained millions is to get ready for a Mad Max world which given our economic mess isn’t so far fetched.  Heck, we have tons of shiny brand new off road vehicles that are simply sitting on lots.

Nothing highlights our lack of preparation more than the big 3 automakers going down in flames.  Sure, we can argue that it was because of this credit crisis or because of legacy costs but the reality is they were outperformed by foreign competitors.  People voted with their wallets.  The big 3 bet on large expensive gas guzzling urban tanks and lost big.  Now, they are teetering on the verge of extinction like the Tyrannosaurs rex.  If the credit crisis was at fault, why aren’t Toyota and Honda on the verge of bankruptcy?

We are at a major crossroads here.  As a society, it is time we refocus our energy on the sciences and engineering and stop thinking about how many ways we can put granite countertops in every kitchen of America.  If we are serious about staying competitive, we need to invest money in these areas.  Initially NASA was seen as a big waste but I think most Americans would rather see money invested in NASA instead of WaMu.  Yet the sad thing is even with all these pathetic bailouts, all the money is going to financial companies which are at the heart of the matter.

I was reflecting on the state of the nation recently and it occurred to me how many people out there are totally unfit for survival in normal modes of human existence.  There’s not enough charity to keep these people alive, and most of them aren’t even worth of charity, preferring death to work.  More choice quotes:

You know what is shocking about the growing list of bailouts?  It isn’t that we come out with a new bailout even before the ink is dry on previous action.  What is striking is the amazing disregard for the future generations of our country.  You do realize as a nation that we are broke right?  So every action that we take to intervene in the markets is done via two methods.  One, we borrow the money which has been the status quo.  The second method is printing money which given the magnitude and the commitment of funds will shortly arrive at our doorstep.  It doesn’t seem like many people care about the moral responsibility of leaving a better country for those that come after us and once again this selfish egocentric give me everything now mentality is dominating Wall Street and Washington.  God forbid that consumers will have to watch their spending for even one freaking holiday season.  You wouldn’t want your kid to go another year without that third edition of Tickle me Elmo.

What is disturbing is we have yet to hear from anyone for nearly an entire decade two simple words:

“Stop spending!”

Stop buying homes you can’t afford.  Stop leasing cars that eat up 40 to 50 percent of your net income.  Stop using your credit card as your personal loan shark.  Stop taking on massive amounts of debt.  Stop spending money you do not have!

Most reasonable people would agree with the above.  But how can Wall Street and Washington ask this of our American citizens when they do the exact opposite.  They spend more than they have.  They run deficits as if they were going out of fashion.  Fiscal responsibility is not allowed in Washington.  Wall Street is the puppet master coming with hat in hand begging for money after they are the machine that created the ecological system for this credit fungus to spread.  And why do they want this money?  To feed the hamster so he can go back on the consumer wheel and keep on spending until he flies off it due to exhaustion.
