Interesting Analysis of Ron Paul by Gary North

And an interesting story about how Yankee-liberal-turned-Texan Bush Sr. managed to get himself on Reagan’s ticket after Reagan defeated him for the 1980 nomination.  Click here to read.  You might have to scroll a bit to get to the story.  I find the Alexa rating data quite compelling.

An even more interesting story is how is it that a die-in-the-wool Red, White & Blue, Pro-Military George W. Bush Conservative Republican who ran for the US Congress in a super-Conservative South Texas District in 1996 accepting both the Governor’s and Carl Rove’s support, 5 years laters turned into a virulent anti-Bush, anti-American, Leftwing Michael Moore type kooky conspiratorialist?

If you haven’t guessed, I’m talking of Ron Paul.

Ron Paul is doing pretty darn good at this stage.

Of the Republican candidates, Ron Paul is 1st in YouTube, Meetup, MySpace, Technorati, Alexa, Google, etc. The old media is just too slow to realize what is happening.

Ron Paul places 1st or 2nd in every straw poll, debate, and active participation survey.

Dr. Ron Paul has the most contributions from U.S. military personnel & veterans above all other candidates. So support the troops and vote Ron Paul!

Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were doing about the same in the ‘Scientific Polls’ at this stage in their elections. ‘Scientific Polls’ at this stage only measure name recognition. Over the next six months Ron Paul will gain name recognition. Most people who learn about Ron Paul become major supporters.

70% of Americans want us out of Iraq and want change.

Ron Paul is only republican candidate against the war.

Ron Paul only needs about 30% vote from republicans sick of the war and abuse of powers to win in republican primaries.

Dr. Ron Paul is the man of integrity and courage that America needs at this time.

Eric, a “George W. Bush” Conservative?! After bloating the federal beast to a rate exceeding Clinton and LBJ, isn’t it obvious to everyone now that that phrase is an oxymoron? Bush has regressed to his Yankee liberal roots, and if you’re hoping to win a primary against Ron Paul, I’d suggest you hook your wagon to someone more popular than a blueblood Yankee liberal from Connecticut and a Jack Mormon from Utah who like to pretend they’re Texans on weekends.

  4. Edward Cropper Says:

After his Y2K hysteria no on really takes Gary North seriously about anything.
Ron Paul for all his attributes has been painted as a kook and it is likely to stick. The drive-by press would kill for such a candidate as Ron Paul.

  5. Tom Says:

I agree that North has to be taken with a grain of salt; his writing skills (he’s a real master of the short, pithy sentence and paragraph, easy and fun to read) tend to overrepresent the validity of his arguments at times. However, I don’t think anyone really predicted Y2K to be so mild. It did hurt his credibility since he was profiting from it, but I try to evaluate arguments independent of the author.

As for Ron Paul, I’m tired of settling for the lesser evil. I’m not even so sure the lesser evil actually is. Split government between Tweedledee and Tweedledum tends to force Tweedledum to listen to his base, whereas unified government under Tweedledum (2002-2006) tends to produce the very opposite of what Tweedledum is supposed to stand for.

So I’ll take Ron Paul over Hillary, and Hillary over the pseudo-conservatives. Hillary would be universally disliked and cause Reps in Congress to grow a backbone.

A pseudoconservative like the frontrunners would just bring more terrible policies like bankrupting Medicare drug entitilements, “nation-building” in hellholes full of Islamic religious nuts who’d rather kill each other than vote, and idiotic “let’s pretend everyone is equal” federal interventions in local matters like No Child Left Behind.

  6. C.S. Hayden Says:

I’m astounded that the first commenter, Eric, hasn’t listened to the words of the man he is now dishonoring. What a shame (!) that he touts himself as a former aide and then turns around to call his former boss a “virulent anti-Bush, anti-American, Leftwing Michael Moore type kooky conspiratorialist.”

Ron Paul’s message is the same now as it has been for about three decades. You know, even the “kooks” at Lew Rockwell’s anarchist-friendly site (which now supports Dr. Paul and posts his speeches and articles) somewhat liked GWB before his election in 2000. Then, as Ron Paul has repeatedly preached, GWB turned from his campaign promise of a humble foreign policy, no nation-building, and no policing the world.

Ron Paul hasn’t changed, even if he used to be supported by GWB. It’s GWB who’s been co-opted by the neo-cons, while Paul has stood strong in the tradition of the Constitution and Founding Fathers. Eric’s words are shameful, and I’m afraid he’s a liar.

  7. Eric Dondero Says:

I’ve listened to all I ever need to listen to of Ron Paul. I used to have to shuffle the guy for 5 hours in the car, all over our Congressional District. I’ve been exposed to more than enough of his looney tune theories; especially the “Stock Market crash is just days away and it’s going to send us all into a depression.” Heard that one for years.

Ron Paul thinks there’s this huge conspiracy behind every curtain.

    I ain’t buying it.

  8. Tom Says:

Yeah, he sounds like a real conspiracy theorist. The Nasdaq is still down over 50% from a trough of 70%. The S&P lost 50% of its value and is still below all-time highs. Gold has more than doubled in price since these events. Anyone who took Ron Paul’s advice about the stock market and bought hard money or other hard assets would be in pretty good shape.

Your argument is self-defeating anyway.  You’re saying voters shouldn’t vote for a kook.  Then why in the heck should they vote for the guy who drove the kook around?  You were just his Sugar Boy with some sour grapes.
